In December 1997, the Government of Turks and Caicos Islands granted approval for the establishment of a medical school on Grand Turks and Caicos. Subsequently, in January 1998, the Ministry of Education of Turks and Caicos issued a license and charter for the operation of the said medical school.
However, by January 2000, the Windsor University School of Medicine made the pivotal decision to relocate. With the principal dean and a cohort of eight students, the institution shifted its base to the Island of Saint Kitts and Nevis. This move was prompted by the previous location’s challenges in accessing necessary resources for the seamless operation of the medical school.
The relocation process was initiated when the then-President, Dr. Srinivas Gaddam, engaged with the Island of Saint Kitts and Nevis in January 2000. This resulted in the educational minister granting approval for the establishment of a medical school on the island, marking a new chapter in the institution’s history.
In March 2000, the Ministry of Education of Saint Kitts and Nevis granted approval and chartered the license for the operation of the School of Medicine. With a firm commitment to providing quality medical education at affordable tuition rates, Windsor University School of Medicine (WUSOM) embarked on its journey. The institution experienced a gradual increase in both student enrollment and faculty members, prompting the Board of Trustees to envision an expansion of the academic campus.
The expansion endeavor began in December 2005 when WUSOM acquired a 7-acre plot of land in Brighton’s Estate, its current location. The construction of the new academic campus commenced and was successfully completed by December 2007, fully operational by January 2008. This updated campus featured four spacious classroom units, an anatomy dissection lab, a multipurpose lab, and a cafeteria.
Over the subsequent years, WUSOM made significant advancements in various aspects of academics, including curriculum enhancement, assessments, faculty development, and student services. This dedication to improvement was reflected in a growing student body and the diversification of the student population. Acknowledging the importance of early clinical exposure during the basic sciences phase, the institution further expanded its campus infrastructure in 2010. This expansion included the establishment of a dedicated clinical skills center and various discussion rooms.
In response to recommendations from the CAAM-HP accreditation site visit in March 2014, WUSOM initiated several enhancements across academics, student services, faculty, administration, and physical infrastructure. Under the guidance of a new Academic Dean, updates were made to the School’s Mission, Educational Objectives, and Curriculum in late 2015. Moreover, the Medical curriculum committee introduced ACGME competencies at the undergraduate medical education level and introduced Milestones that students should achieve at different stages of the MD program.
Notably, WUSOM embarked on a recent campus expansion project that commenced on May 19, 2015, and was completed in December 2017. This expansion included the construction of a new 30,000 square feet building. Within this new structure, state-of-the-art facilities were established, such as a simulation lab, a modern library complex, a clinical education center, and a gymnasium equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment, advanced computer software, e-books, and journals. This expansion reinforced WUSOM’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and up-to-date learning environment for its students.
